Bruning Earns Capital One Academic All-America Second Team Honors

AUSTIN, Texas - After landing on the Capital One Academic All-District At-Large First Team in May, Anderson University women's tennis standout Rebecca Bruning earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Second Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Wednesday.

Bruning becomes the first player in program history to earn Academic All-American status, and is one of three South Atlantic Conference student-athletes to claim the national honor. Wingate's Jasmine Arzadon (swimming) and Tusculum's Calley Lawson (golf) landed on the third team, as the three were the only representatives from the Southeast Region.

Bruning shined all season long as she posted a 17-2 singles record with a 10-1 mark against SAC opponents. The sophomore saw time at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions this season and led the Trojans to a 15-6 overall record, marking the program's most wins in the SAC era. In doubles, Bruning paired up with freshman Ivey Welborn and notched a 13-5 overall record and was ranked fifth in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Doubles Rankings in late May.

For her accomplishments on the court, Bruning was named to the All-SAC First Team Singles and Doubles, joining SAC Player of the Year Carlotta Nassi as the only players from the league to accomplish the feat. The Athens, Ga. native was also tabbed AstroTurf SAC Player of the Week twice this season, increasing her career total to three weekly honors.

In the classroom, Bruning carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Biochemistry, as she has been named to the Anderson University Dean's List following every semester of her collegiate career. Bruning has led the women's tennis team to two Shirley Jacks Awards, which honors the team with the highest team GPA at AU. The sophomore is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national honors society for student-athletes and a member of Gamma Beta Phi, a service-based honor society.

Away from the court, Bruning has volunteered with the Anderson Humane Society and the Rotaract Club of Anderson, while also working to raise funds for the Anderson University Cancer Research Center. With Gamma Beta Phi, Bruning assisted in the Great Anderson County Clean-Up Day where she spent many hours cleaning parks throughout the county. Within her major, the sophomore volunteered with the Athens Regional Medical Center with the Neuroscience Department.

"Rebecca has been a great addition to our women's program," head coach Joey Eskridge said. "Not only is she exceptional on the court as a player, but also in the classroom, as she is second to none with a 4.0 and Biochemistry major on top of that. I wish I had six of her - it would make my job very easy as a coach."

The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
