Women’s Tennis Readies for Two Road Contests at Converse, Carson-Newman

ANDERSON, S.C. - After suffering back-to-back South Atlantic Conference setbacks last week, Anderson University women's tennis hits the road for a pair of contests beginning on Friday with a trip to nonconference opponent Converse, followed by a SAC road showdown with Carson-Newman. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m.

The Trojans
AU dropped to Queens on Wednesday, 8-1, and Tusculum on Saturday, 7-2, and fell to 6-3 overall with a 3-2 mark in league play. The Trojans have now dropped three of their last five matches, but remain in sixth in the current league standings, as the only team to play five conference matches thus far in the season.

The bright spot on the week came from sophomore Rebecca Bruning, as she claimed her second AstroTurf SAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week honor this season and third of her career. The sophomore shined last week with a pair of conference singles wins while playing at the No. 2 position. This season, Bruning is a team-best 8-1 overall with a perfect 5-0 mark against SAC opponents.

In doubles, the tandem of Mairead Cleary and Lindsay Gregory continues to lead the team with their six wins on the year. The pair of Bruning and Ivey Welborn follows with a 4-2 mark while playing at the No. 1 doubles positon.

The Valkyries
Converse is still seeking its first victory on the season, dropping to 0-5 on the year after the Valkyries fell in their pair of matches last week to Conference Carolinas rival Erskine and SAC member Lenoir-Rhyne by identical 9-0 scores. Friday's matchup will be Converse's second home match of the season.

Entering the match on Friday, Converse has won just two singles matches on the year, as Klaire Rouse and Liz Graham have victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Overall, the Valkyries are 2-28 in the singles round for the season.

In doubles, the tandem of Kaitlin Knight and Alex Schlessener is tied with Margaret Pridmore and Samantha Sheffield with matching 1-4 records.

The Eagles
Carson-Newman is an even 2-2 on the season with wins over Virginia-Wise and SAC foe Mars Hill and setbacks to nonconference opponents Young Harris and Alabama-Huntsville. Most recently, the Eagles captured a 7-2 victory over MHU it their first conference home match of the season.

Leading the team in singles is Jill Corsato and Patricia Guerreiro with four singles wins apiece, while Guerreiro is 3-1 while playing at the No. 3 position this spring. Catherine Cooke follows with three wins, despite not playing in the spring.

In doubles, the pair of Guerreiro and Jennifer Ott holds a perfect 6-0 record this season, including a 4-0 mark for the spring. The duo is a main part of C-N's 14-4 record in doubles competition for the campaign.
