Trojans Open Conference Action With 10-5 Win Over UVA Wise

WISE, Va. – Kicking off their second season of South Atlantic Conference action in just their third game of the year, the Anderson University (3-0, 1-0 SAC) women's lacrosse team was able to stave off a late run from the Cavaliers of UVA Wise (1-2, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 10-5 on Thursday, February 15.

Freshman Ava Skeffington (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Trojans on the day with a trio of goals and pair of assists to tally five points in the contest while sophomore Alicia Cannon (Tarzana, Calif.) secured four points for the Black and Gold with two goals and a pair of assists as well. Freshman Rayne Dobson (Houston, Texas) followed up her performance in her last outing with two goals to help the Trojans. Sophomore Ava Drath (Hudsonville, Mich.) recorded 11 saves on the afternoon, allowing just five goals.

It was slow goings for the offense of both squads in the first half, as only three goals were scored over the opening 30 minutes of action. However, positively for the Trojan faithful, all three of those goals came out of the sticks of Anderson players. Dobson got the game kicked off for the Black and Gold as she tallied a goal with 5:33 left in the first with Cannon notching the second of the quarter with 1:30 to play.

Freshman Jerianne Morris (New Port Richey, Fla.) was able to post the lone goal in the second quarter of action to give Anderson the 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Trojans came out in a similar fashion in the second half, though they were able to double their production in the first eight minutes of the third quarter as they were able to score three goals over that stretch with a pair coming from Skeffington. But that's when the Cavaliers were able to turn up the heat and outscored the Trojans by a 4-0 margin over the final minutes of the third period to bring the margin back to just two heading into the final period of action.

Cannon and Dobson quickly recorded two goals for Anderson in the fourth and the Trojans responded to a single UVA Wise goal with a pair on the back side to close out the contest and take the 10-5 win.

The Trojans return home to face the Wasps of Emory & Henry on Saturday, February 24 at 3:00 p.m.
