Men’s & Women’s Tennis Visits Tusculum on Saturday

ANDERSON, S.C. - After the Anderson University men's and women's tennis teams picked up a split against South Atlantic Conference rival and nationally-ranked Queens on Wednesday, the Trojans return to conference action on Saturday when they hit the road to Tusculum. First serves from the Roger M. Nichols Tennis Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Men's Tennis Added Key Win over Queens
AU claimed its fourth straight triumph with a 5-4 upset over No. 29 Queens on Wednesday, marking the team's first win over the Royals as SAC members. With the win, Anderson comes into the weekend with a 7-1 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark in league play, matching the 2013 team's start to a conference schedule, as that season's team won a conference regular-season title.

Sophomore Mateo Rivas and junior Inaki Iriberry tallied three-set wins over the Royals on Wednesday, as the tandem continues to lead the team in victories on the season with seven apiece. Rivas headlines the duo with three wins at No. 2 and four victories at No. 3, while Iriberry boasts a 7-1 mark at No. 5.

In doubles, the Trojans are 15-9 overall, as six different doubles pairs have taken the court through the first eight matches. The lone doubles team to win against Queens was Iriberry and junior Paul Michael Calhoun, as the tandem is 3-1 for the year at No. 3.

Women's Tennis Looks to Bounce Back
Anderson suffered its first conference setback of the season by falling to nationally-ranked Queens, 8-1, on Wednesday. The loss snapped a brief two-match winning streak and moves AU to 6-2 on the year, as it begins a stretch of six straight road contests.

The lone team point by the Trojans came from sophomore Rebecca Bruning who notched a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Queens' Melissa Laing at the No. 2 position. Bruning, who was named to the Preseason All-SAC Singles First Team, improved to 7-1 on the year with a 4-0 mark in conference play. With the win on Wednesday, the Athens, Ga. native has won her last three matches.

In doubles, the pair of Mairead Cleary and Lindsay Gregory continues to pace the team in victories with six on the year. Despite a setback to Queens on Wednesday, the tandem clings to a 3-1 mark against SAC opponents.

The Pioneers
Both the men's and women's teams have not begun their spring seasons, as both teams finished undefeated during the fall, combining for a 9-0 overall record. Last season, both TC squads advanced to the SAC Tournament championships with the women's team fending off Newberry in the title match while earning the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, where they eventually fell to No. 2 Armstrong, 5-0.

Before the start of the season, the men's team was projected to win the SAC title in the Preseason SAC Coaches' Poll after receiving six first-place votes and placing two on the All-SAC First Team Singles list in brothers Lukas and Jonas Winkelmann. The brothers also landed on the All-SAC First Team Doubles squad, while teammates Tashique Kader and Leon Seiz were picked to the All-SAC Second Team Doubles list.

The women's team placed second in the Preseason SAC Coaches' Poll, as five different Pioneers found a spot on the preseason teams with Kate Hutchinson and Erin Mills claiming slots on the All-SAC Second Team Singles list, while Amanda Sumner and Emily Waters landed on the All-SAC Second Team Doubles squad. The doubles team was joined by Hutchinson and Heffner on the second team.

Last Time Out
In last season's meeting, the AU men's team picked up a narrow 5-4 win, while the women's team dropped a 5-4 decision to Tusculum on Feb. 23.
