Bruning Selected to Academic All-District At-Large Team

ANDERSON, S.C. - After stringing together a team-high 17 singles wins on the season, Anderson University women's tennis standout Rebecca Bruning has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team for District III, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Bruning was one of two players from the South Atlantic Conference to be selected to the All-SAC First Team Doubles and Singles list at the end of the regular season, as she closed the year with a 17-2 overall record playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. For her two-year career, the Athens, Ga. native boasts a 30-5 overall singles record, including a 20-1 mark against league opponents during the regular season.

In doubles, Bruning and teammate Ivey Welborn were ranked No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Rankings to close the regular season. The duo closed the year with a 13-5 overall record with a 7-3 mark against the SAC, as they landed on the All-SAC First Team Doubles list. The honor marked the first time a doubles team from AU has been placed on the on the All-SAC First Team Doubles list.

In the classroom, Bruning carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Biochemistry, as she has been named to the Anderson University Dean's List following every semester of her collegiate career. Bruning has led the women's tennis team to two Shirley Jacks Awards, which honors the team with the highest team GPA at AU. The sophomore is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national honors society for student-athletes and a member of Gamma Beta Phi, a service-based honor society.

Away from the court, Bruning has volunteered with the Anderson Humane Society and the Rotaract Club of Anderson, while also working to raise funds for the Anderson University Cancer Research Center. With Gamma Beta Phi, Bruning assisted in the Great Anderson County Clean-Up Day where she spent many hours cleaning parks throughout the county. Within her major, the sophomore volunteered with the Athens Regional Medical Center with the Neuroscience Department.

Bruning becomes the first Academic All-District At-Large member from AU since former women's tennis standout Emily Weiland in 2011.
