Late Push Falls Shorts as Trojans Drop Contest to Catawba

ANDERSON, S.C. – Trailing by just a few points in the waning minutes of the contest, the Anderson University (12-10, 7-7 SAC) fell just short of snapping the Catawba Indians (14-4, 11-3 SAC) five-game win streak as they dropped a 79-73 decision in the Abney Athletic Center on Saturday, February 10.

Senior Mack Burgett (Richmond, Va.) posted a team high 15 points in the contest with freshman AJ Wright Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) adding 14 points and sophomore Austin Webb (South Point, Ohio) pitching in 12. Senior Garrett Denbow (Ashland, Ohio) led the squad with seven boards to go with his 11 points.

A low scoring affair was the name of the game in the opening minutes of action as only 13 points were recorded between the two teams in the first four minutes of action with Catawba holding the slight 7-6 lead. The next stretch of the contest saw the Indians slowly begin to open a lead over the Black and Gold as they were able to take a three-point advantage into the next stoppage.

Anderson continued to battle each time the Indians extended their lead, the Trojans were able to claw back to limit the distance between the two teams, through the Indians held a six-point advantage at the under-8 media timeout. That advantage shrunk to just two four minutes later, with the lead eventually swinging into the Trojans favor with just over three minutes to play. However, their offense went cold for the rest of the half as Catawba retook the lead and carried the 36-30 advantage into the break.

A quick run from the Indians to open the second half forced the Trojans to take an early timeout in the period, but the Indians were able to maintain their advantage despite the on-the-fly adjustments from the Black and Gold. Halfway through the final period the Trojans were able to bring the lead back down to single digits and then continued to chip into Catawba lead, closing the gap to just two points with 2:36 to play. Catawba fended off a late push from the Trojans to take the contest by a 79-73 final score.

Anderson returns to action on Wednesday, February 14 as they welcome Limestone to the Abney Athletic Center with a 7:30 p.m. scheduled tip.
