Women’s Tennis Claims Narrow 5-4 Victory over Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. - With a match-clinching victory by sophomore Rebecca Bruning at the No. 2 singles position, Anderson University women's tennis fended off nonconference opponent Limestone, 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center.

The win was the Trojans' 10th of the season, as they have captured victories in four of their last five contests and improved to 10-4 on the season. On the opposite end, the Saints snapped a six-match winning streak and dropped to a 6-4 record for the year.

AU opened the nonconference match with a pair of victories in the doubles portion, as the pair of Bruning and freshman Ivey Welborn fended off Limestone's Alexandra Boulbin and Marian Pinate at the No. 1 position, while the sister team of senior Lindsay Gregory and freshman Abigail Gregory defeated Jessica Martinez and Hannah Hopkins, 8-1, at No. 2.

In the singles round, Welborn continued the Trojans' winning ways by cruising to a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Manon Janin at the No. 1 spot. Lindsay Gregory followed the freshman's win with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Julia Moreira at the No. 6 slot to post her fifth consecutive victory on the year, pushing the Anderson lead to 4-1.

Despite the advantage on the scoreboard, Limestone began a comeback by earning victories at No. 5 and No. 3 to make the score 4-3. With the small advantage, Bruning put the match out of reach with a three-set, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Boulbin at the No. 2 position for her team-high 12th win of the season.

Limestone set the final score with a victory at No. 4, as the Trojans jump to 6-2 in road matches this season.

Anderson is scheduled to return to the courts on Sunday when it heads to Converse to close a streak of seven straight road contests. First serve from the Sparkle City is set for 1 p.m.
