Softball Drops Two To Open Season At USC Beaufort

BEAUFORT, S.C.- Anderson University softball (0-2) dropped its season doubleheader opener at USC Beaufort (2-0), 13-5 (6) in game one and 13-2 (5) in game two, on Thursday afternoon at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

"We literally have no excuse for the way we played today," said head softball coach Tommy Hewitt. "USCB out played us in every facet of both games. We were out preformed in pitching, hitting and fielding, the most basic parts of the game."

"We need to get it together by Saturday when we play North Greenville," added Hewitt. "They may have one of the best hitting team we will face all year!"

Game One

  • Anderson was leading the game 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. USCB scored 11 runs in its half inning and added a lone run in the sixth to claim the 13-5 victory.
  • The Trojans committed three errors.
  • Anderson was outhit 9-to-7.
  • Senior Hannah Whitaker and Freshman Paige Vickery each collected two hits and two RBI. Whitaker belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
  • Senior Laken Maxwell (0-1) suffered the loss after tossing 4.1 innings. Maxwell game up four hits, walked seven and struck out six.
  • Sophomore Katie Morris came on in relief. Morris gave up five hits and seven runs with a strikeout.

Game Two

  • The Sand Sharks jumped out to a 9-2 lead after two innings of play.
  • USCB outhit the Black and Gold, 14-to-5.
  • AU had three miscues.
  • Five different Trojans collected one hit with Vickery hitting her second double of the day.
  • Graduate Morgen Baker-Celis (0-1) gave up nine hits and nine runs in 2.0 innings of work.
  • Senior Lane Edgington pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up five hits and four runs.

Next Up

Anderson will remain on the road to face-off with nonconference foe North Greenville on Saturday. First-pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1pm and 3pm.
