Bruning Claims AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Award

ROCK HILL, S.C. - For the second time this season, Anderson University women's tennis sophomore Rebecca Bruning has been named AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played between March 2-8, announced by the league office on Monday.

The weekly honor is her third of her career, as she went a perfect 2-0 in singles for the week. On Wednesday, the sophomore tallied a 7-5, 7-6 win over Melissa Laing of Queens, despite AU's setback to nationally-ranked Royals. On Saturday, the Athens, Ga. native captured a three-set 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 win over Tusculum's Erin Mills for the Trojans' only win in the singles portion against the Pioneers.

Earlier in the match against TC, Bruning paired up with freshman Ivey Welborn and defeated Kate Hutchinson and Kealee Heffner at the No. 1 positon, 8-3.

For the season, Bruning boasts an 8-1 overall record including a perfect 5-0 mark in conference singles matches. With the 8-1 record, the sophomore is 3-0 while playing at No. 1 spot and 5-1 when seeing action at No. 2. Within the last two weeks, Bruning has won her last four singles matches.

Bruning looks to lead the Trojans on Friday when they hit the road to Converse. First serve from the Sparkle City is scheduled for 2 p.m.
