Trojans Fall Just Short in Game One; Drop Doubleheader to Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Though the Anderson University (17-19, 7-14 SAC) baseball was able to find their bats today, posting 17 hits between the two contests, they were unable to pick up a win in either game as they dropped a doubleheader to Carson-Newman (20-16, 13-8 SAC) on Saturday, April 6.

Sophomore Gray Wells (Chapin, S.C.) helped the Trojans the most on the scoreboard today as he was able to turn in three RBIs between the two contests. Senior Kye Andress (Hendersonville, N.C.) tallied a pair of RBIs in the late game while freshman Zach Stover (Powdersville, S.C.) and Carson Molinaroli (Summerville, S.C.) were each able to turn in a single RBI on the day. Graduate Trey Princiotto (Horseheads, N.Y.) pitched well in the opener, despite taking the loss, as he was able to fan four batters. Senior Ryan Brash (Aiken, S.C.) performed well also, allowing just one hit in his three innings of relief.

Game One: Carson-Newman 4, Anderson 3

The scoring in the opening contest came early for both squads as the Trojans were able to post a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first inning, thanks to a hard RBI-ground out from Wells and an infield single from Stover that gave them the 2-0 lead. That advantage was held until the bottom of the second when the Eagles were able to tie the game back up with two runs of their own.

A sacrifice fly for Wells in the top of the third swung the lead back to the top line of the scoreboard, however that lead was short lived for the Black and Gold as they gave up a pair of runs to Carson-Newman in the bottom of the third, with neither team posting another run on the board the rest of the way, giving the Eagles the 4-3 win.

Game Two: Carson-Newman 15, Anderson 6

The story of the second game was consistent scoring from the Eagles, as they were able to post runs in every inning of the contest. Anderson was able to put up a crooked number in the top of the fourth to add on to their earlier two runs, but over the same stretch the Eagles were able to turn in seven runs on their own, holding the 7-5 lead.

The bottom of the fifth is where the Eagles put the contest out of reach, turning in six runs in the frame to further their lead to 13-5. Anderson got back a run in the top of the sixth, but Carson-Neman added another pair to their tally in the bottom of the frame, securing their 15-6 win.

Anderson will now make their second trip down of the season to North Georgia as they travel to Dahlonega, Ga. on Tuesday, April 9 for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
