Bruning, Welborn Honored by South Atlantic Conference

ROCK HILL, S.C. - As focus shifts to the postseason beginning on Thursday, Anderson University women's tennis standouts sophomore Rebecca Bruning and freshman Ivey Welborn were recognized by the South Atlantic Conference, as Bruning was picked to the All-SAC First Team singles and doubles, while Welborn joined Bruning on the first-team singles list and claimed a spot on the All-SAC Second Team singles list, announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

Bruning claims her second postseason all-conference accolade after landing on the All-SAC Second Team singles list after the 2014 regular season. For the season, the Athens, Ga. native holds a team-high 16 singles wins with a 10-1 mark against conference opponents. Bruning enters the postseason on a five-match winning streak, as she boasts a 12-2 mark while playing at the No. 2 position.

For her two-year career, Bruning holds a 29-5 singles record with a 20-1 mark against league opponents.

Welborn claimed a spot on the All-SAC Second Team Singles list after finishing the regular season with a 7-6 overall record while playing the entire season at the No. 1 position. The Anderson, S.C. native finished 5-4 in her first season in SAC play.

On the doubles side, Bruning and Welborn are 12-4 on the season with a 7-3 record in the SAC, as all 16 of their matches have come from the No. 1 position. The tandem has been ranked as high as No. 22 in the National Intercollegiate Tennis Association Doubles Rankings and enters the SAC Tournament as the No. 24 ranked doubles pair.

Prior to the start of the season, the duo was positioned on the Preseason All-SAC Second Team Doubles list following its stellar fall season with a trio of wins at the ITA/USTA Regionals.

Bruning and Welborn look to lead the Trojans on Thursday when they begin their postseason campaign in the opening round of the SAC Tournament. Anderson, which earned the No. 5 seed, squares off with fourth-seeded Newberry with the first serve from the Brevard College Tennis Complex scheduled for 1 p.m.
