Smith's Gem, Trio of Hot Bats Boost Trojans to Doubleheader Sweep of King

ANDERSON, S.C. – Senior Kye Andress (Hendersonville, N.C.), freshman Zach Stover (Powdersville, S.C.) and sophomore Gray Wells (Chapin, S.C.) each recorded five RBIs on the day as the Anderson University (4-2) baseball team swept a doubleheader with the King University (0-6) squad by scores of 8-7 and 13-0, respectively and the Anderson Memorial Stadium on Friday, February 9.

Senior JC LeGrand (Lugoff, S.C.) turned in a perfect 3-for-3 mark in the first game of the day, completing the trifecta with a trio of RBIs as well. Graduate Trey Princiotto (Horseheads, N.Y.) tossed six complete innings in the opener while fanning six to pick up the win while graduate Ben Thornton (Greer, S.C.) closed out the game to earn the save. Junior Ben Smith (Cleveland, Tenn.) tossed a complete game gem in the nightcap, pitching a two-hit shutout of the Tornado while recording five strikeouts.

GAME ONE: Anderson 8, King (Tenn.) 7

The Tornado wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the contest and used the long ball to do so as their second batter was able to record their first of four home runs in the opening game to take the 1-0 lead. Anderson brought the contest back even in the bottom of the second with a two-out single from LeGrand.

However, King had a response in the top of the third as they were able to plate two runs with the Trojans answering with a run of their own to close the gap to 3-2 after three complete innings. The Tornado posted another run in the top of the fourth but it was the last time they led in the contest as the Trojans exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth with three straight singles to lead-off the frame before scoring a run off a sacrifice fly. Three more singles strung together by the Black and Gold plated three more runs for Anderson that gave them the 8-4 lead. The Trojans bullpen was able to keep the Tornado in check after allowing three more runs they were able to shut them down and give the Trojans the win 8-7.

GAME TWO: Anderson 13, King (Tenn.) 0

Highlights were shown on both sides of the ball for the Trojans in the nightcap as they had solid performance both on the bump and in the batter's box. A defensive miscue in the first gave Anderson the lead in the game followed by a blistering grand slam shot by Andress in the bottom of the fourth to further extend their advantage out to 5-0.

Another defensive miscue in the bottom of the sixth kicked off an eight-run inning for the Black and Gold in the bottom of the sixth that put the game out of reach. A bases loaded walk and a bases clearing double by Wells brought the contest to 10-0 before Stover turned in the second homer of the day for the Trojans to left center field that brought around three more run to secure the 13-0 win in the nightcap.

Smith's performance on the mound allowed only two hits and just one walk, not allowing a runner past second base in the entire contest.

The Trojans wrap up their three-game series with the Tornado with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday, February 10.
