Trojans Secure First Conference Series With 9-8 Win Over Emory & Henry

ANDERSON, S.C. - A pair of errors by the Wasps defense in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Anderson University (10-7, 4-5 SAC) the series victory as they downed Emory & Henry (2-14, 1-8 SAC) by a score of 9-8 on Monday, March 4.

Senior Kevin Sosa (Deltona, Fla.) and freshman Zach Stover (Powdersville, S.C.) were each able to tally a pair of RBIs in the contest with Stover going a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish. Seniors Carlos Hernandez (Maracay, Venezuela) and Kye Andress (Hendersonville, N.C.) each added an RBI as well. Senior Ivan Vanbeverhoudt Jr. (Orlando, Fla.) fanned seven in his start on the mound while senior Jonathan Duffie (Waynesboro, Ga.) picked up the win in relief.

Anderson continued their trend of jumping out to an early advantage this week as they were able to post five runs on the board in the first inning. The Trojans recorded five hits in the frame, all singles, to bring around those runs, including a sacrifice bunt to finish off the inning with a 5-0 lead. Emory & Henry was able to chip into that lead a little bit in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs but the Trojans responded in the sixth with another run to keep the game in their favor at 6-3.

Each team scored a run in the seventh and the squads exchanged solo home runs in the eighth, but Anderson was able to continue holding the lead at 8-4 heading into the final frame. E&H exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth before Duffie was able to record the final out. The Wasps gave the game away in the bottom of the frame as a pair of errors on the same two-out play let the Trojan runner score from second and give Anderson the 9-8 win.

The Trojans get no rest as they travel to Franklin Springs, Ga. tomorrow, March 5, to take on Emmanuel in a non-conference matchup at 1:00 p.m.
