Smith's Pitching Performance Splits Day with Catawba

ANDERSON, S.C. – After dropping the first game of the doubleheader, the Anderson University (19-20, 8-15 SAC) baseball team was able to bounce back in the night cap, picking up a 3-1 win over league leading Catawba (31-10, 18-5 SAC) as they split the twinbill on Saturday, April 13 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

Senior Carlos Hernandez (Maracay, Venezuela) and freshman Zach Stover (Powdersville, S.C.) were each able to pick up three hits across the two contests with Stover recording an RBI as well. Junior Luke Poole (Greenwood, S.C.) and senior JC LeGrand (Lugoff, S.C.) were able to turn in RBIs in the first game while freshman Carson Molinaroli (Summerville, S.C.) and junior Anthony Pandolfi (Hicksville, N.Y.) joined Stover in recording them in the night cap.

GAME ONE: Catawba 13, Anderson 2

It was a quick paced start to the day as the teams traded zeroes on the scoreboard for the first three innings of the contest. However, that speed slowed down in the top of the fourth as the Indians were able to post five runs in the top of the frame to take the advantage and then added an additional run to their tally in the top of the fifth to lead 6-0. Anderson scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth and another in the bottom of the eighth to start to make it interesting in the late goings at 6-2. But, Catawba opened up a seven run showing in the top of the ninth inning to put the contest out of reach, wrapping up their 13-2 win.

GAME TWO: Anderson 3, Catawba 1

Again Catawba was able to take an early lead in the contest, this time with a single run in the top of the first inning, but the Trojans were able to hold them there and work out of the inning. Turning to the bottom half of the second, Anderson was able to tie the game for the first time outside of 0-0 with a single run in the frame off the bat of Pandolfi to level the contest at one each.

The bottom of the third saw the Trojans take their first lead of the day as an RBI-single from Stover and a bases loaded walk drawn by Hernandez was able to swing the lead to the bottom portion of the scoreline, 3-1. Junior Ben Smith (Cleveland, Tenn.) pitched a gem on the mound as he turned in the complete game performance allowing just one run. He was able to fan two of the final three batters of the contest to give Anderson their 3-1 win.

The two teams return to the diamond tomorrow, Sunday, April 14 as they wrap up their three game series with a rubber match scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
