Men’s & Women’s Tennis Faces Newberry, GRU Augusta This Week

ANDERSON, S.C. - With a combined six wins between the two teams last week, Anderson University men's and women's tennis returns to the courts and South Atlantic Conference action on Tuesday with a road matchup with Newberry, followed by a nonconference meeting with GRU Augusta on Wednesday. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m.

The Trojans
On the men's side, AU is 10-2 on the season with a 7-1 record in SAC play, as it enters the week on a three-match winning streak. The Trojans sit a half-game behind Wingate for the top spot in the conference, as they continue to chase Wingate, which holds a perfect 7-0 record in conference matches.

Headlining the AU lineup is freshman Harrison Kansol who has yet to drop a singles match this season, coming into the week with a perfect 8-0 record with a 7-0 mark against conference opponents while playing at the No. 6 position. Also shining in the singles round has been junior Inaki Iriberry, who posted his team-high 10th win in the 5-4 road victory over Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.

For the women's team, the Trojans are also riding a current three-match winning streak and hold a 9-3 overall record with a 6-2 mark in the conference. Identical to the men's team, Anderson posted wins over Carson-Newman, Brevard and Lincoln Memorial last week, as it is two games out of first place chasing Queens and Wingate, which are unbeaten in conference play.

Leading the team in victories is sophomore Rebecca Bruning with an 11-1 overall record with a perfect 8-0 mark facing conference counterparts. The Athens, Ga. native is 9-1 in her last 10 matches with an 8-1 mark while playing at the No. 2 position. Pairing up with freshman Ivey Welborn in the doubles round, the tandem is 7-2 on the year with a 6-1 record squaring off with conference opponents.

The Wolves
The Newberry men's tennis team has dropped two of its last three and enter Tuesday's conference contest with an 8-6 overall record and a 2-3 mark in league play, as it has fallen in its last two SAC matches to Catawba (5-4) and Wingate (6-3). The Wolves are currently in a three-way tie for sixth place in the current league standings.

Highlighting the men's lineup is Jordan Monosky who carries a team-high 11 wins while seeing action at both the No. 4 and No. 5 positions. Despite his double-digit win total, Monosky is 3-2 against SAC players, but is 8-2 in his last 10 matches.

On the women's side, Newberry eclipsed the double-figure win total with a 12-4 record on the season with a 3-2 mark in the league. Despite the 12 wins for the year, the Wolves have dropped their last two matches to Tiffin (5-4) and league-leading Wingate (8-1).

Leading Newberry is Amanda Carrillo with a 13-1 record, as she comes into Tuesday's match on a nine-match winning streak. Carrillo is 5-0 against SAC opponents and boasts a 12-1 mark while playing at the No. 3 slot. In doubles, Carrillo and Vanessa Ortiz lead the team with 11 wins.

The Jaguars
The Jaguar men's tennis team is slotted sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Region, as they are 11-3 on the season with wins in three of their last four matches. Most recently, GRU Augusta has posted back-to-back shutouts over Concord and Belmont Abbey, but holds a 2-3 mark in Peach Belt Conference action.

Leading the way in the Jaguar lineup is senior Romain Ferriera who is 8-1 on the spring season. For the year, Ferriera is 7-1 at the No. 1 position, as he holds a 2-1 mark in the PBC.

On the women's side, GRU Augusta moved to ninth in the latest ITA regional rankings, as it carries a 12-2 record for the season with a 5-2 mark in the league. The Jaguars have posted victories in their last six matches, including shutouts over Georgia Southwestern and Concord.

Pacing the club in singles victories is Maria Pimentel with a 12-1 record, including a 10-1 mark at the No. 4 spot. Pimentel is on a seven-match winning streak, which is the second-longest stretch on the team, following Amelia Pinoargote's streak of nine straight triumphs at the No. 6 position.
