Trojans Close Road Schedule with 5-3 Victory at USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. - After rolling through the doubles portion with three straight wins, Anderson University women's tennis added a nonconference victory with a 5-3 win over Peach Belt Conference opponents USC Aiken Thursday afternoon at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.

With the victory, the Trojans improve to 14-5 on the season and capture their third straight triumph, while USC Aiken dropped to 7-9 overall.

AU began quickly as sophomore Rebecca Bruning and freshman Ivey Welborn fended off Pacers Oliver Veskovac and Sarah Bernos, 8-5, at No. 1. At No. 2, junior Alexandra Ebner and sophomore Mairead Cleary tallied an 8-3 victory over Shauna Williams and Kayla Calvert at the No. 2 spot, while the sister team of freshman Abigail Gregory and senior Lindsay Gregory notched an 8-3 win over Marie Habiyaremye and Sabrina Tam at No. 3.

USC Aiken began a slight comeback in the singles round with three wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4. Despite the Pacer victories, Bruning and junior Nikkola Wichenko put the match out of reach. Wichenko posted her fourth straight singles victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tam at No. 6, while Bruning defeated Veskovac in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot to seal the win.

The Trojans wrap up their regular season on Monday when they host archrival Erskine. First serve from Max Grubbs Memorial Courts is set for 3 p.m.
