Trojans Stay Successful on Road Trip; Down Saints 94-84

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Continuing their three-game road stint to start the 2024 calendar year, the Anderson University (7-6, 2-3 SAC) picked up their second straight South Atlantic Conference victory with a 94-84 decision over the Saints of Limestone University (8-7, 4-2 SAC) on Wednesday, January 10.

Senior Garrett Denbow (Ashland, Ohio) led all scorers in the contest with 33 points on five threes and an 11-for-18 night from the floor. Sophomore Cole Middleton (Atlanta, Ga.) pulled in another double-double as he picked up 11 points to go with his team leading 10 rebounds. Senior Mack Burgett (Richmond, Va.) tallied 18 points in the contest and was tied for the lead on the team with five assists with freshman AJ Wright Jr. (Tampa, Fla.), who also added 12 points to the Trojans tally.

Anderson was able to score the first four points of the contest before Limestone was able to claw back into the opening minutes of action. However, the Trojans were able to convert on a lay-up just before the first media timeout to extend their lead out to six at 11-5. The next four minutes of action were stagnant as far as the lead goes, but both teams were able to make offensive adjustments with Anderson still holding the 21-16 advantage at the under-12 media.

That margin was cut to just one by the Saints over the next stretch as they outscored the Trojans by a 14-10 spread, bringing the contest to 31-30 with just 6:40 to play in the opening stanza. Limestone was able to take their first lead of the contest just a minute later but Anderson responded right back and opened the lead back up to four with just under three to play in the first. That lead doubled over the final minutes of the opening half as Anderson carried the eight point advantage into the break at 47-39.

By the time the contest reached the under-16 media in the second half the Trojans had tacked on two more points to their advantage to increase it to 10 and that is where it would stay at the next media timeout as well. Limestone fought to make it a contest over the next five minutes as they were able to cut the Anderson lead in half to just five with 7:12 to play in the game.

Anderson responded with a flurry of offense in the next stretch as they were able to nearly bring their advantage back into the double digits with a score of 83-74 sitting on the scoreboard with 3:28 to play. Some missed free-throws down the stretch for the Trojans gave the Saints a glimmer of hope, but Anderson continued to force missed shots on their defensive half and rounded out the contest with the 10-point win at 94-84.

Anderson finishes their three-game road trip as they head to Wise, Va. to take on UVA Wise in a conference showdown on Saturday, January 13 with a 4:00 p.m. tip.
