Trojans Shutout Cobras in Game Three; Split Doubleheader

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Looking to rebound from a series opening loss yesterday, the Anderson University (7-6, 2-4 SAC) baseball team was able to deal Coker (9-5, 5-1 SAC) their first conference loss of the season, taking the final game of the series by a 6-0 shutout after dropping the early game of the day 10-2.

Junior Luke Poole (Greenwood, S.C.) was a perfect three-for-three in the late game while recording an RBI while junior Wesley Mann (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) and sophomore Mac Ketchin (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) were each able to record a pair of RBIs in the nightcap while senior Carlos Hernandez (Maracay, Venezuela) added one as well. Ketchin tallied one in the first game as well as freshman Zach Stover (Powdersville, S.C.). Junior Ben Smith (Cleveland, Tenn.) picked up his second win of the year with a six-inning performance in the nightcap, fanning six batters along the way.

GAME ONE: Coker 10, Anderson 2

After the teams both went scoreless in the first inning, the Cobras were able to jump out to an advantage in the bottom of the second inning, posting three runs on the board while holding the Trojans scoreless. Coker added runs in each of the third and fourth innings before Anderson was able to get on the board in the top of the fifth with a single run in the frame using some smallball tactics before tallying the run on a sacrifice fly by Stover.

Coker added another run to their lead in the fifth and further added three more in the seventh while a defensive miscue in the top of the eighth on the side of the Cobras gave the Trojans their second run of the contest, but their scoring stopped there as the Cobras added one more to take the game 10-2.

GAME TWO: Anderson 6, Coker 0

The Trojans were able to find their footing in the third game of the series as not only were they able to pick up a win, but they were able to hold their opponents scoreless in the contest. A two-out single in the top of the first gave the Trojans their first lead of the weekend as Poole drove in a run that gave Anderson the 1-0 advantage.  Continuing to hold Coker scoreless, the Trojans were able to post three runs on the top line of the scoreboard in the third inning as a trio of RBI-singles from Hernandez, Ketchin and Mann boosted the Anderson lead to 4-0.

A sacrifice fly from Mann in the top of the fifth and an RBI-single from Ketchin in the bottom of the seventh extended the Anderson advantage out to the final mark of 7-0 to take the final game of the weekend series.

The Trojans return to the diamond on Tuesday, February 27 as they welcome in Findlay for a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m. at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
