Trojans Drop First Game Of Regional Play

MONROE, N.C. – Anderson softball lost its opening game in the NCAA Tournament to the top-seeded Bulldogs of Wingate, 5-0, on Thursday afternoon at Union Academy.

Paced by Wingate's All-SAC and All-Region pitcher Hali Scott two-hitter and Scott's two-run homer, leading the top-seeded and seventh-ranked Bulldogs to victory on day one of the NCAA Southeast Regional softball tournament. The Bulldogs improve to 47-9 overall, advancing to the winner's bracket game Friday at 10:30 a.m. The Trojans fall to 34-18 on the year and will play in an elimination game Friday at 1 p.m. versus Lander.

Juniors Maddie Carpenter and Maggie Nauck each collected one hit apiece as WU's Scott kept the Trojans quiet at the plate.

Graduate Morgen Baker-Celis (10-6) was tagged with the loss, pitching six innings. Baker-Celis gave up 11 hits while striking out three.

Anderson will face Lander in the elimination game on Friday. First-pitch is slated for 1 pm.
