ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University women's tennis team was defeated by Coker on Saturday afternoon at the Coker Tennis Courts.
The Trojans fall to 10-11 overall and 5-6 in the SAC, while the Cobras improve to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in conference action.
In the doubles round, No. 1 seeded Ivey Welborn and Rebecca Bruning defeated Jennifer Mezei and Bailey Palmer, 8-5 while Alexandra Ebner and Jennifer Holcombe won 8-4 over Jessi Campos and Sarah Elliott to gain an early 2-1 advantage.
In the singles portion, the Trojans battled hard falling just short of earning the decisive fifth point. Winning at the No. 1 spot Rebecca Bruning defeated Jennifer Mezei 6-4, 6-0 to earn her 15th singles victory of the year. No. 3 seed Ivey Welborn continued her solid play defeating Jessi Campos 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to earn the fourth point for the Black and Gold. Freshman Jennifer Holcombe and Sophomore Abigail Gregory each battled their opponent hard falling in three sets, giving the Cobras a 5-4 victory.
The Trojans return home to finish out their season with a nonconference match versus Conference Carolinas opponent Limestone on Wednesday. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at the AU Tennis Complex.
