ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson women's tennis team opened its spring season in convincing fashion by shutting out Columbia College, 9-0, Monday afternoon at the AU Tennis Center.
Anderson freshman Jennifer Holcombe got it rolling for the Black and Gold by blanking Columbia's Rebekah Ravago, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles, with senior Alexandra Ebner continuing the momentum with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep of the Koalas' Mary Curtis Twitty at No. 5 singles. After AU's Rebecca Bruning blanked Michelle Troup, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 singles' slot, Ivey Welborn defeated Sanja Pantelic, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
Karen Faria (AU-W) knocked off Caitlyn Wolfe, 6-0, 6-0, while Natalia Moreno wrapped up the singles action by getting past Miranda Brown, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4.
Senior Nikkola Wichenko teamed up with sophomore Abigail Gregory to blank the Columbia duo of Ravago and Brown, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles, with Faria and Ebner shutting out Pantelic and Troup, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles. Welborn and Bruning closed out the afternoon with an 8-4 win over Twitty and Wolfe at No. 3.
The Trojans are scheduled to get back on the courts on Saturday at Southern Wesleyan. First-serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
