ANDERSON, S.C. -USC Aiken earned a 2-1 lead following the doubles
round and captured all six singles matches, as Anderson University
women's tennis fall 8-1, Wednesday afternoon at the AU Tennis
Complex.
The setback was the Trojans' first of the season, as they fall
to 3-1 on the year after winning their first three matches of the
season for the second time in recorded program history. With the
win, USC Aiken improves to 4-1 on the season.
In the doubles round, AU's Rebecca Bruning and Ivey Welborn
defeated USC Aiken's duo of Nadine Tusiama and Olivera Veskovac
8-3, at the No. 1 position. The Pacers captured the lead when No. 2
pair Sarah Bernos and Marie Habiyaremye knocked off Karen Faria and
Alexandra Ebner 8-4 and Victoria Giannaccini and Kayla Calvert
fended off Elizabeth Beachy and Abigail Gregory at the No. 3
position, 8-5.
As the teams closed the doubles portion, three Trojans sent
their matches to three sets in singles. Welborn lost 7-5, 4-6, 3-6
at No. 2, Bruning was defeated 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the No. 3 slot, and
Ebner fell 6-3, 1-6, 2-6 at No. 4.
Anderson remains home this weekend when it opens South Atlantic
Conference play, welcoming Mars Hill on Saturday and Brevard on
Sunday. First serve both days are scheduled for 1 p.m. at the AU
Tennis Complex.
