Women’s Tennis Drops First SAC Match Against Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After nationally ranked, No. 45, Queens earned a 3-0 lead following the doubles round, the Royals captured all six singles matches, as Anderson University women's tennis was blanked, 9-0, Sunday at Freedom Park.

The setback was the Trojans' first South Atlantic Conference loss, as they fall to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. With the win, the Royals improve to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in SAC play.

In the doubles round, Queens Carlotta Nassi and Melissa Laing defeated Anderson's duo of #22 Ivey Welborn and Rebecca Bruning, 8-3, at the No. 1 position. The Royals added to their lead at No. 2, as Marta Gonzalez and Caroline Nielsen knocked off Karen Faria and Alexandra Ebner, 8-3, while Claire Hamilton and Hannah Lehfeldt fended off Abigail Gregory and Nikkola Wichenko at the No. 3 position, 9-8 (7-5).

As the teams closed the doubles portion, the Royals controlled the singles by winning all six matches in straight sets.

Anderson will return home on Friday when it hosts South Atlantic foe Lincoln Memorial. First serve from the AU Tennis Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
