Women’s Tennis Picked Fourth In SAC Preseason Poll


ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Anderson women's tennis team has been predicted to finish fourth in the South Atlantic Conference in a vote by the league's coaches as released Thursday by the league office.

In addition to the rankings, the doubles team of junior Rebecca Bruning and sophomore Ivey Welborn earned First-Team All SAC honors. Bruning was also honored First-Team All SAC in singles, while Welborn earned Second-Team All SAC.

The Trojans boasted a 15-6 overall record for the season and a 6-4 mark within the SAC last season. Anderson claimed victories in three of its last four contests, and recorded six 9-0 shutout wins for the season.

After posting its most wins in the South Atlantic Conference era, Anderson entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Rankings for the first time last season, earning the No. 49 slot, while earning the No. 9 position in the final ITA Southeast Regional Rankings. The Black and Gold entered the SAC tournament as a five seed winning their opening round tournament match before falling to the top-seeded Bulldogs of Wingate.

Wingate, which collected nine first-place votes and 131 points, claimed the top spot in the poll. Queens (128 points) picked up two first-place votes and was selected second. Tusculum (117 points) was third snagging one first-place vote.

Anderson accumulated 99 points to place fourth. Newberry (94 points) and Coker (68 points) occupied the fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman shared the seventh spot in the preseason rankings. Lenoir-Rhyne, Catawba, Mars Hill, and Brevard rounded out the poll.

Anderson opens their 2016 season at home versus Columbia College on Tuesday Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
