ANDERSON, S.C. - With a sweep in the doubles round, Anderson University women's tennis used its momentum from a 3-0 start to cruise in the singles round, eventually leading to its first victory of the fall, blanking Emmanuel, 9-0, Friday afternoon at the brand new AU Tennis Complex.
With the victory, the Trojans open the year with a 1-0 record with one match remaining on their fall schedule.
Sophomore Abigail Gregory and newcomer Jennifer Holcombe opened AU's scoring in the doubles round, as they rolled to an 8-0 victory at No. 3, while the team of senior Alexandra Ebner and newcomer Natalia San Jose Moreno earned an 8-2 win over EC's Katharina Kiderlen and Kaylee Kirby at No. 2. Sealing the 3-0 lead was sophomore Ivey Welborn and junior Rebecca Bruning as they knocked off Fantine Botella and Pearllan Cipriano, 8-1, at No. 1.
In the singles position, Bruning recorded Anderson's first victory with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Kiderlan, while Welborn followed by adding a 6-1, 6-0 win over Botella at No. 1. At No. 3, graduate student Karen Ching notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Cipriano, while Moreno defeated Kirby, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. Rounding out the singles portion was Ebner with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Abi Muesse at No. 5, while AU's Nikkola Wichenko shutout Somalia Lewis, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position.
The Trojans close out their fall schedule on Saturday, Sept. 26 when they host Southern Wesleyan. First serve from the AU Tennis Complex is scheduled for 11 a.m.
