Bruning Earns AstroTurf SAC Women’s Tennis Player of The Week


ANDERSON, S.C. - After posting three singles victories and two doubles wins last week, junior Rebecca Bruning of Anderson University women's tennis has been named AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for matches played between Mar. 21 - Mar. 27, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

Bruning was recently ranked as the No. 45 singles player in the nation by the Oracle/ITA Division II Women's National Singles Ranking becoming the highest ever ranked women's player in Anderson program history. The Athens, Ga. native is also ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region in singles play while partners Ivey Welborn and Bruning are currently the No. 9th ranked doubles pairing in the Southeast Region.

Bruning (14-2) dominated singles play for the week defeating Julia Ponomareva, 6-4, 6-3, while winning against Vanessa Ortiz of Newberry, 6-3, 6-0. Bruning then defeated Patricia Guerreiro by retirement to end her week at a perfect 3-0 in singles action.

In doubles play, the duo of Bruning and Welborn defeated Newberry pairing of Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo, 8-5, while winning over Carson Newman's Patricia Guerreiro and Jill Corsato, 8-1. The No. 9th ranked doubles pairing in the Southeast Region, Bruning and Welborn are 12-5 overall this season with a 25-10 all-time record as a pairing.

Bruning and the Trojans return to the courts Wednesday when they travel to SAC powerhouse No. 38 Wingate. First serve is set for 2 p.m at the WU Tennis Facility.
