Mollenhauer Earns South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year for the Second Straight Season

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Anderson University women's basketball senior standout Alexy Mollenhauer has been selected as the 2020 South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year, an award which recognizes excellence in athletics, academics, service and leadership.

"Honestly words cannot express how much Lexy has done for this program," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree.  "I know you will read about all the numbers, records, and awards but those things can't come close to explain it."

"Let me try and paint this picture for everyone," emphasized Barbaree. "Lexy is a 4.0 student who speaks four languages, plays the piano, and yes can make a shot every now and then. But for those that don't know her, Lexy is an extremely unselfish player and the ultimate teammate, who loves to see her friends succeed!"

Lexy is strong in her faith," added Barbaree. "She loves the Lord and represents what Anderson University is about. She prays for her team, coaches, school, and I've even seen her pray for other players in this conference when they've gone down with an injury. That's who Alexy Mollenhauer is!"

"We are extremely proud of her, love her and want to congratulate her on this award," concluded Barbaree.

The SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards are presented to one male and one female student-athlete in each of the conference's 20 championship sports. The awards are voted on by the league's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.

Mollenhauer has maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA in English/secondary English education. The senior guard has been recognized with numerous accolades throughout the season.

In the classroom, she was a 2019-20 CoSida Academic All-America® Division II Women's Basketball First Team selection, a CoSida Academic All-District® honoree, the SAC Elite 20 Award winner, as well as being a Dean's List selection and a four-time SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree.

Mollenhauer started in all 31 games and averaged 36.0 minutes, 19.7 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game to go along with 51 blocks and 33 steals. The six-foot guard produced 20 double-doubles, while scoring 20-plus points on 16 occasions. She pulled down an impressive eight-plus rebounds per contest in 30-of-31 games played. Mollenhauer became the first Anderson player to reach at least 1000-points (1,949) and 1000-rebounds (1, 017) and the third player in the SAC record books to accomplish the feat.

The native of Lindale, Texas garnered multiple post-season athletic honors, including being named SAC AstroTurf Player of the Week on five occasions, while also earning an USBWA DII National Player of the Week Honor. Mollenhauer was named to the D2CCA All-America First Team, WBCA All-America First Team, NCAA Southeast Region Player of the Year, SAC Player of the Year, SAC First Team and SAC All-Tournament Team.

Mollenhauer has served in Hope Kids at Hope Fellowship Church for the last four years. She volunteers at two schools, Calhoun Academy of the Arts and Nevitt Forest Elementary, reading to the elementary students. She has also participated in Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project for the past two years and has helped with numerous girls basketball summer camps hosted at Anderson.

"We are so proud of Alexy and all she has accomplished both on and off the court at Anderson University," said Vice President of Athletics Dr. Bert Epting, Jr. "She leads with excellence and grace not only on the floor, but in the classroom with her students, in the dining commons with her peers, and in her relationship with Christ. Congratulations Alexy and we are excited to see all you accomplish in the years to come!"

This marks the third straight year that a Trojan player has won this award. Graduate student, Alexis Dillard was the recipient in 2017-18, followed by Mollenhauer's back-to-back honors.
