Five Trojans Honored By Conference, Agirre Named to SAC First Team

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Advancing to the SAC Championship semifinals in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, Anderson University women's soccer placed five on the SAC All-Conference teams, headlined by junior forward Idoia Agirre's first-team selection, announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

Agirre was the only Trojan to land on the first team, while teammates Mariana Poveda and Faith Johannes claimed spots on the second team and freshmen Kenzie Van Heusen and Megan Foster landed on the Honorable Mention list. The five all-conference selections mark the most postseason accolades by the program in the SAC era.

Agirre led the Black and Gold in the penalty-kick victory over fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday, scoring in the 82nd and 86th minute to send the match into overtime before AU captured a 4-2 win in the penalty-kick round. Agirre enters the semifinal round with a league-leading 22 goals while also leading the conference in shots (83) and tying with Van Heusen for second in assists with seven. The Legazpi, Spain native has scored in 11 matches on the year, and has a pair of hat trick under her belt.

During the year, Agirre became the first Trojan to earn AstroTurf SAC Player of the Week honors twice, while also earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America Player of the Week honors following the first week of the season. Most recently, Agirre was voted Hero Sports D2 Gem of the Week following her hat trick against nonconference opponent Emmanuel on Oct. 14.

Poveda provided the final penalty-kick goal to send the Trojans to the semifinals, while also handing out the assist on Agirre's equalizer on Tuesday evening. Poveda has anchored the midfielder all season long, making starts in all 18 matches for the year. The Catago, Costa Rica native has totaled a pair of goals with five assists on the year, while ranking sixth on the team in shots with 20.

Johannes lands on the All-SAC team for the second time in her career, as she racked up her fifth all-conference nod including a pair of preseason all-conference honors. Johannes had captained a backline that has produced seven clean sheets, while also claiming an assist for the year. Battling injuries at the start of the year, the Las Vegas, Nev. native has made 14 starts and 15 appearances.

Van Heusen has shined in her first season with the Black and Gold, following Agirre with nine goals, while tying the forward in assists with seven. The Homestead, Fla. native has three game-winning goals to her credit, headlined by a goal with less than 30 seconds left to defeat Mars Hill in the regular-season finale on Oct. 31. Van Heusen ranks seventh in the SAC in points with 25 and 14th in shots with 43.

Foster has become a staple in the Trojan midfield, starting in 17 of AU's 18 matches for the 2015 campaign. The Dayton, Ohio native has totaled five goals with three assists, including scoring the game-winning goal on Homecoming against Lincoln Memorial on Oct. 24. Foster joins Van Heusen as the second and third freshmen in program history to earn SAC Honorable Mention honors.

The quartet leads the Black and Gold into Friday's SAC Championship semifinal where it will square off against top-seeded Carson-Newman, seeking their second victory over the Eagles this season. Earlier this year, Anderson edged C-N, 3-2, during the effects of Hurricane Joaquin at the Upward Star Center in Spartanburg, S.C. after the match was forced to be move due to unplayable conditions at Trojan Stadium. Kick-off from Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill is scheduled for 5 p.m.
