Women’s Soccer Readies for Trip to Southern Wesleyan on Saturday

ANDERSON, S.C. - After a convincing 4-0 win over Shorter in the season opener, Anderson University women's soccer looks to move to 2-0 to open the year when it hits the road for the first time to nonconference opponent Southern Wesleyan. Kick-off from Childs Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Trojans
AU claimed its second straight season-opening shutout in as many years, as it tallied a 2-0 win over Southern Wesleyan in last season's home opener. The victory over Shorter marked the first non-regional win by the Black and Gold since a 1-0 win over Valdosta State on Oct. 19, 2011.

Finding the scoresheet against the Lady Hawks was a pair of newcomers, as freshman Kenzie Van Heusen netted a pair of first-half goals, while junior transfer Idoia Agirre rounded out Anderson's scoring with two second-half goals. The duo currently leads the South Atlantic Conference, as they were the only players in the conference to score multiple goals on the opening day of the season.

Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Abby Helm notched her first collegiate shutout, recording three saves in the process. On the afternoon, Shorter recorded just five shots, as redshirt sophomore Tera Dolan and freshman Lexxi Longmore played the entire 90 minutes along the backline.

The Warriors
Southern Wesleyan looks to bounce back after a disappointing 2014 season where it finished with a 2-14 overall record. This season, the Warriors welcome 11 newcomers and return 13 players as depth will look to be non-factor for SWU after finishing the 2014 campaign with just 14 healthy players.

SWU's offense is led by Grace Taylor and Brittany Woodhouse, as Taylor has scored six career goals and averages 36.5 shots per season. Despite redshirting last season, Woodhouse ranked second on the team in goals following the 2013 season and looks to contribute right away in 2015.

In goal, sophomores Courtney McNeil and Ashleigh Kelley are competing for the starting goalkeeper role. McNeil earned starts in five contests last season, while Kelley saw a lot of time on the field and away from the posts due to low numbers.

The Series
Last season, Anderson spoiled Southern Wesleyan's debut in Division II with a 2-0 win over the Warriors. Then-freshman Rachael Whaling posted two goals in the victory, handing AU its first win over SWU since the teams last met on Sept. 4, 2002.
