Agirre Tabbed Hero Sports Division II Gem of the Week

BELLEVUE, Wash. - With nearly 50 percent of the popular vote, Anderson University women's soccer standout Idoia Agirre has been named Hero Sports Division II Women's Soccer Gem of the Week, announced by the publication on Tuesday.

Agirre was nominated for the weekly honor after scoring her second hat trick of the season in the Trojans' 5-0 shutout over Emmanuel on Oct. 14. Since the win over the Lions, Agirre added another goal last Saturday in a 2-0 blanking of Lincoln Memorial to set her goal total of 19 for the season. With her 19 goals, Agirre currently ranks third in the country in total goals and fourth in total points with 44 with one regular-season contest remaining on the schedule.

Agirre fended off Grand Valley State's Kendra Stauffer (140 votes) and Armstrong State's Erica Laurens (129) to win the Gem of the Week award, as she racked up 347 votes marking 49.78 percent of the popular vote. The 347 votes marks the third-highest vote total this season by any Gem of the Week. The forward also becomes the first player of the Southeast Region to claim the plaudit.

Agirre becomes the second Trojan in school history to receive recognition from Hero Sports, as former AU Women's Basketball standout Lesley Woods earned the weekly honor when the publication was called BennettRank last year.

With a home match in the South Atlantic Conference Championships on the line, the Legazpi, Spain native and the rest of the Trojans return to the pitch on Saturday when they hit the road to Mars Hill. Kick-off from the Tar Heel State is scheduled for 2 p.m.
