Coleman Shares Eighth Place; Men’s Golf Finishes 16th at Bearcat Classic

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Paced by junior Reece Coleman's 54-hole 2-under-par 214, the Anderson men's golf team finished in 16th place, Tuesday at Lander's Bearcat Classic.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament was held at the Greenwood Country Club and featured a 6,800 yard, par-72 layout.

"Well, we were hoping to move up a few spots," said Anderson Director of Golf Danny Neal. "But instead went the other way. A very disappointing round as a team today allowed some teams to pass us. Reece (Coleman) continued his steady play. He just did not get any help from the rest of the team. Hopefully, a few days off for spring break will do them good and we can strive to clean up some parts of our games."

Barton overcame a one-stroke deficit by shooting the low round of the tourney (276) and claimed the team title by 12 shots over runners-up Lander and Carson-Newman. Erskine moved up two spots to finish in fourth place, with Clayton State falling one spot into fifth. Belmont Abbey and West Georgia finished in a tie for sixth, with North Georgia and Queens finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.

Newberry finished in 10th place, while Tusculum claimed the 11th slot. Coker, Lander (B), Lenoir-Rhyne, Georgia College, Anderson, North Greenville, King, Wingate, Southern Wesleyan, Catawba and Emmanuel rounded out the 22-team field.

Barton's Bryson Boyette broke a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard following Monday's first two rounds to claim individual medalist honors by three shots over runner-up Linus Jonsson from Lander. Carson-Newman's Jonathan Nielson, who was deadlocked with Boyette and Jonsson following the second round, finished four strokes off the pace in third place.

Coleman, whose opening round 70 marked his third-lowest round of the year, finished in a tie for eighth place – his third consecutive top-10 finish. Sophomore Calahan Keever carded a 12-over 228 and finished in a tie for 68th place, while sophomore Daniel Coker shared the 73rd spot. Freshman Simon Wright wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 90th place, while junior Anthony Sutton shared 107th place.

Following a two-week layoff, the Trojans will get back on the links at the Tusculum Invitational, scheduled to be held at the Graysburg Hills Golf Club in Chuckey, Tenn., which will also be the site of next month's South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf championship.
