Men’s Golf in 16th Place after First Day of Bearcat Classic

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Using a two-round 1-under-par 143 from junior Reece Coleman, the Anderson men's golf team is in 16th place following the first day of the Bearcat Classic on Monday.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament features 22 teams, with Lander hosting the event on a 6,800 yard, par-72 Greenwood Country Club layout.

"I was disappointed with our first round today," said Anderson Director of Golf Danny Neal. "The wind wasn't as strong as expected and we really let some rounds get away from us. A 310 was much worse than we should have posted. A bright spot from that first round was Reece (Coleman) shooting 70, which placed him among the individual leaders. In the afternoon round, we were able to rebound. Daniel (Coker) came back from a first round 81 to shoot 72. Reece and Simon both shot 73 and Calahan added a 74. (The second round) was much more in line with where we should be scoring. Hopefully, tomorrow we can produce another good round and possibly move up a few spots."

Carson-Newman leads Barton by one shot heading into Tuesday's final round action, with Lander one stroke further back in third place. Clayton State is fourth, with West Georgia holding the fifth spot. Erskine and North Georgia are sixth and seventh, respectively, while Belmont Abbey and Coker share eighth place. Lander (B) is in 10th place, with Newberry holding onto 11th place. Queens is in 12th place entering the final 18 holes, while Lenoir-Rhyne, Georgia College, Tusculum, Anderson, King, North Greenville, Wingate, Southern Wesleyan, Emmanuel and Catawba finish out the field.

Barton's Bryson Boyette, Lander's Linus Jonsson and Carson-Newman's Jonathan Nielson each fired 5-under-par 139s in Monday's opening round and lead C-N's Jackson Tyler and Clayton State's Augusto Oliva by two strokes in the chase for individual medalist honors. A trio of golfers are just three shots behind, while another four players, including AU's Coleman, are four shots off the pace and are tied for ninth place after carding two-round 143s.

Coleman's opening round 70 marked his third-lowest round of the year, with sophomore Calahan Keever posted an 8-over 152 and sharing 61st place. Sophomore Daniel Coker shares the 66th spot, with freshman Simon Wright in a tie for 77th place. Junior Anthony Sutton heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for 107th place.

The final round is scheduled for a Tuesday morning start.
