FLORENCE, S.C. - Anderson College placed a school record five players on the 2004 All-CVAC Softball team, which was announced Friday night at the league's annual softball banquet. Anderson, 23-34 overall and 14-6 in the CVAC, placed two players - Carolyn Smith and Kari Huggins - on the first team. Smith, a 5-8 junior catcher from Mauldin, S.C., caught every inning (373) of all 57 regular-season games and led AC in batting at .345. She had nine doubles, five triples, and drove in 25 runs. Behind the plate, she recorded 260 putouts and had a field average of .961. Huggins, a 5-6 senior from Georgetown, S.C., made the first team as the designated player. She batted .246 with two doubles and 20 RBI. AC placed three players - shortstop Cindy Crosby, centerfielder Rachelle Lawrence, and pitcher Ashley Rogers - on the second team. Crosby, a 5-5 junior from Walterboro, S.C., batted .268 with three doubles, three triples, one homer, and 14 RBI. She recorded 123 putouts, 120 assists, and had a fielding percentage of .949. Lawrence, a 5-5 freshman from Columbia, S.C., was second on the team in batting at .315. She had two doubles, one triple, and drove in 19 runs. She had 88 putouts, eight assists and had a fielding percentage of .950. Crosby and Lawrence both started all 57 regular season games. Because of injuries, Rogers, a 5-7 freshman from Liberty, S.C., became AC's No. 1 starting pitcher. She finished the regular season with a record of 13-11 and an ERA of 2.52. In 174 2/3 innings, Rogers struck out 98, walked 66, and pitched three shutouts. Anderson's previous high for All-CVAC softball players in a single season was two.
