Francis Marion Takes Two From Softball Team

FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion hit four home runs and took advantage of 10 walks to sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader from Anderson College Sunday afternoon. In game one, sophomore short stop Heather Garrison hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and the Patriots (8-2) scored six runs in the sixth frame to take a 9-1 victory. Freshman Sam Goff (4-1) picked up the win as she allowed only seven hits and one unearned run. Junior center fielder Betsy Bouknight led FMU with three hits, three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Freshman infielder Tatjana Slawson joined Garrison with two RBIs. Kari Huggins and Lauren Cooley led Anderson (4-12) with two hits apiece, while Lauren Powell took the loss. In the second game, Slawson and freshman Janine Allen both homered in an eight-run third inning as the Patriots claimed an 11-3 win in five innings. Slawson finished the second game with three RBIs, while Bouknight drove in two more runs. Garrison also homered in the second game, while Natalie Taylor, Allen, and Mina Roof all pounded out two hits apiece. Freshman righty Jessica Johnson (2-1) was the recipient of the run support while none of the three runs she allowed were earned. She fanned six and walked only one. Carolyn Smith was the lone Lady Trojan with two hits in game two, while starter Ashley Rogers (3-2) took the loss. Five of the nine runs she allowed were unearned.
