Softball Team Takes Two From Mount Olive

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson College scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning without a hit to take a 4-3 victory in the second game and sweep Mount Olive in a CVAC softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Ashley Rogers blanked Mount Olive for six innings and Cindy Crosby had an inside-the-park home run to lead Anderson to a 6-1 victory. The second game was tied 1 through five innings, but in the bottom of the sixth, Anderson got a triple from Carolyn Smith, her second of the game, and a single by Stephanie Griffis to take a 2-1 lead. Griffis had four hits and three RBI in the doubleheader. Rogers, who pitched a complete game six-hitter in the first game, entered the second game in relief in the third and was in control until the top of the seventh. After Sam Beavers reached on a fielder's choice, Liz Recny hit a two-run double to put runners at first and second. Kim Goens then hit a tapper to the right side that confused the Anderson defense. Beavers scored to tie the game, and Recny beat a throw home to give Mount Olive its first lead of the day, 3-2. In the two games, Recny was 6-for-7 with 1 RBI and two runs scored. But in the bottom half of the seventh, Anderson manufactured two runs. After Melissa Waters walked, Erin Case, who had pitched all 12 innings for Mount Olive, was relieved by Shauna Cowdrey. Crowdrey hit Rachelle Lawrence to put runners on first and second, and Kari Huggins loaded the bases with an infield dribbler after Mount Olive failed to cut down Waters at third. A walk by Shelly Sawyer tied the game at 3. After Carolyn Smith flied out, Lauren Cooley walked for the winning RBI. For the afternoon, Rogers pitched 11 1/3 innings, scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs to pick up two victories and improve her record to 13-9. Just one of the runs was earned. Anderson has now won five straight and six of its last seven to improve to 22-29 overall and 13-5 in the CVAC. Mount Olive is now 13-27, 6-12. Game 1: Anderson 6, Mount Olive 1 Game 2: Anderson 4, Mount Olive 3
