ANDERSON, S.C. -- Lauren Cooley tripled and scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Kelly McCrodden in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead Anderson College to a 5-3 victory in the second game and a sweep of Queens University of Charlotte in a CVAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, the two teams went back and forth for almost three hours before Shelley Sawyer scored on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Griffis in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Anderson a 6-5 victory. The sweep improves Anderson to 14-23 overall and 5-1 in the CVAC. Queens is now 1-16, 1-3. The first game was tied at 2 after two innings and stayed that way through seven. After trading single runs in the eighth, Queens got an RBI single from Bridget Strader and Erika Brummel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Royals a 5-3 lead. But Anderson answered in the bottom of the ninth. Tie-breaking runner Ana Rogers scored on a single by Cindy Crosby and then Crosby scored the tying run on a two-out single by Kari Huggins. After Queens failed to score in the top of the 10th, Cooley sacrificed Sawyer, the tie-breaking runner, to third and then Sawyer scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Griffis. Both teams had 10 hits in the first game. Carolyn Smith was 4-for-5 for Anderson. Queens stranded 14 runners in the first game while Anderson left 12. Anderson pitcher Ashley Rogers went the distance in the first game to earn her eighth victory. In the second game, Anderson scored three unearned runs in the first, but Queens bounced back with two runs in the third on a walk, a single by Erin Crager, a sacrifice, a ground out by Brummel and a single by Brittany Harkey. The Royals tied the game at 3 in the fourth on two walks, a fielder's choice, and an error. After Cooley scored in the fourth to give Anderson a 4-3 lead, the Lady Trojans added a single run in the fifth on a fielder's choice and an error. Queens stranded 11 runners in the second game, five in the last three innings. Both teams had seven hits in the second game. Crosby and Smith had two hits apiece for Anderson, while Harkey and Jennifer Churchill had two hits apiece for Queens. McCrodden pitched 5 1/3 innings to pick up the victory in the second game. She allowed five hits, struck out three and walked three. Game 1: Anderson 6, Queens 5 Game 2: Anderson 5, Queens 3 Season Statistics
