Carson-Newman Sweeps Softball Team

ANDERSON, S.C. - Designated hitter Kera Croteau provided the game-winning hit - a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning - to lead Carson-Newman to a 5-3 victory in the second game and a sweep of a non-conference softball doubleheader against Anderson College Monday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Megan Elliott, who also won the second game in relief, pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out 13 to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 victory. Carson-Newman received run-scoring singles from Christi Hampton in the fourth and Lisa Rogers in the fifth to scratch out a 2-0 lead in the second game. Eagle starter Lyndsi Craig had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings before Anderson erupted. With one out, Stephanie Griffis singled and Cindy Crosby tripled to cut the Eagle lead to 2-1. Crosby scored the tying run on a bunt by Melissa Waters, who advanced to second after Craig's throw got away from catcher Kim Thorne. A two-out double by Carolyn Smith scored Waters to give Anderson a 3-2 lead. But the Eagles answered in the seventh. A single by Haley Allen and a walk by Erin Rutherford put runners at first and second. After a fielder's choice cut down Allen and a fly out, Croteau ripped a double to left center to give Carson-Newman a 4-3 lead. Pinch-runner Megan Bates scored an insurance run on a double by Thorne. Elliott, who entered with one out in the sixth, put Anderson down in order in the seventh to pick up her second victory of the afternoon. Carson-Newman scored two single runs in the first game. In the first inning, LeAndrea Johnson led off with a double, Haley Allen singled, and Johnson scored on a throwing error. In the sixth inning, Rogers doubled and pinch-runner Libby Seal stole second and scored on a wild pitch. Anderson's Lauren Powell went the distance in the first game. She allowed six hits and struck out eight. Carson-Newman is now 10-2, while Anderson falls to 4-14. Season Statistics
