Carson-Newman Takes Two From Softball Team

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Cristi Benton had three hits and drove in two runs to lead Carson-Newman to a 5-2 victory in the second game and a sweep of Anderson College in a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the C-N Softball Complex. In the first game, the Eagles scored seven unearned runs in the fourth inning and pitcher Megan Elliott limited Anderson to one hit as Carson-Newman blanked AC, 11-0 in five innings. The sweep improves Carson-Newman to 27-4. Anderson is now 14-25. In the first game, the Eagles scored single runs in the first and second, and two runs in the third before putting the game away in the fourth. Carson-Newman sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs. The big hit in the inning was a three-run triple by Erin Rutherford to for the Eagles' final three runs. Elliott faced the minimum in five innings. AC's lone hit was a single by Carolyn Smith, who was eliminated when Kari Huggins hit into a double play. In the second game, Carson-Newman jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Anderson got one run back in the third on a single by Rachelle Lawrence and an RBI double by Smith. A ground out by Benton brought in one run and a double by pinch-hitter Kim Thorne brought home a second run to give Carson-Newman a 5-1 lead through four innings. Anderson scored its final run in the fifth on a single by Cindy Crosby, a stolen base, and two errors. Anderson hits the road this weekend for two CVAC doubleheaders -- St. Andrews on Saturday and Barton on Sunday.
