DUE WEST, S.C. -- Shelly Sawyer, Lauren Cooley, and Stephanie Griffis drove in two runs apiece to lead Anderson College to a 9-4 victory over Erskine in the second game and a split of CVAC doubleheader Thursday afternoon. In the first game, Charlene Ashby scored on a bunt by Kim Gunter in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Erskine a 3-2 victory. The split improves Anderson to 17-28 overall and 8-4 in the CVAC, while Erskine now stands at 12-24, 5-7. The split also keeps the first Anderson-Erskine Cup Sponsored by ARAMARK tied with two sports remaining -- baseball Friday and Saturday at Anderson and men's tennis Tuesday at Due West. After dropping the first game, Anderson scored three runs in the top of the first of the second game. The highlight of the inning was a two-run double by Sawyer. Erskine got twos run back in the second on a home run by Ashby, who also had two doubles in the second game, and two fielder's choices and a throwing error. Anderson scored first in the top of the fourth on a walk by Carolyn Smith, who advanced to second when Melissa Waters was thrown out trying to steal third, and then scored on a single by Kari Huggins. Erskine tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Belinda Oakley, a sacrifice, and a double by Carol Gojan. The Fleet took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a single by Amy Miller and a one-out double by Rebecca Clontz. Anderson remained scoreless until the seventh. With two outs in the seventh, Waters doubled and then scored on an error. Smith doubled to put runners at second and third, but Huggins grounded out to end the inning. After Anderson failed to score in the eighth, Erskine got a walk and a sacrifice to put runners at second and third with no outs. Gunter then provided the winning bunt. Rogers scattered nine hits, struck out five, and walked three. Gunter allowed just six hits in eight innings, struck out four, and walked four.
