ANDERSON, S.C. -- Limestone College pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth inning and held on to beat Anderson College 7-5 in the second game and gain a split of a CVAC softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Smethers Field. The game remained tied at 4 through seven innings and both teams scored a single run in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Limestone scored two runs for a 7-5 lead. The first run scored on a throwing error, and the second run came home on a two-out, two-strike double by Amy Yates. Hawkins retired Anderson in order in the bottom of the ninth to give the Saints the split. Hawkins scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked one to earn the victory. In the first game, Carolyn Smith was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Lawrence was 3-for-4 and scored three runs to lead Anderson's 12-hit attack. Anderson scored three times in the fourth to increase its lead to 7-0. Limestone committed three errors in the inning, and Smith provided a two-out, two-run single. But the Saints bounced back. Back-to-back doubles by Powell and Katie Matheis broke up Andersons starting pitcher Kelly McCrodden's shutout in the fifth. In the seventh, Limestone made it interesting. Courtney Silva led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Yates. After a fly out, Powell rapped another double to cut the Anderson lead to 7-3. After a ground out, Lauren Miceli and Melissa Hampson had back-to-back doubles to make it 7-5 and bring the tying run to the plate. After Hampson's double, McCrodden was replaced by Ashley Rogers, who got a ground out to end the game. Anderson is now 23-30 overall and 14-6 in the CVAC, while Limestone stands at 20-23, 11-7. Fourteen CVAC victories in a single season is a record for the Anderson program. The Lady Trojans could finish the season as high as second in the league standings. Season Statistics
