ANDERSON, S.C. - Summer Joyner doubled to score Amy Shelley in the top of the eighth inning to give Coker a 2-1 victory over Anderson College and a split of a CVAC softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Ashley Rogers pitched a four-hitter and Anderson made its one hit count as the Lady Trojans pulled out a 1-0 victory. Anderson scored the only run in the first game in the third. With two outs, Cindy Crosby singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch third strike. Coker pitcher Somer Bigham was the hard-luck loser. Bigham allowed just one hit, struck out 10, and walked just one. Rogers, a freshman from Liberty, allowed four hits, struck out four, and walked just one. The loss in the first game was Coker's first in CVAC play this season after 12 straight victories. In the second game, Anderson scored first in the fourth inning on a lead off double by Melissa Waters, a wild pitch, and a fielder's choice. But the Cobras tied the game in the fifth and ended their scoreless streak at 11 1/3 innings on a one-out walk to Christan Morabito and a double by Shelley. The game remained tied at 1 through seven innings. In the top of the eighth, Shelley, the tie-breaking runner, started the inning on second. Joyner promptly doubled to center field against Rogers, who had replaced AC starter Kelly McCrodden in the sixth, to give the Cobras a 2-1 lead. Rogers got two fly balls and a strike out to leave Joyner stranded at second. In the Anderson eighth, Shelly Sawyer started the inning at second and moved to third on a passed ball. But Coker pitcher Kaylene Fountain recorded two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game. Fountain allowed just three hits and struck out six in eight innings of work to earn the victory. Anderson is now 12-23 overall and 3-1 in the CVAC, while Coker is 28-7, 13-1. Game 1: Anderson 1, Coker 0 Game 2: Coker 2, Anderson 1 Season Statistics
