Men’s Golf Cards School-Record Opening Round on Day One of Tennessee River Rumble; Trojans in Second Place

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. – Behind a school-record opening-round 277, the Anderson University men's golf team is in second place following the first two rounds of the Tennessee River Rumble, Monday at the Wind River Golf Club.

Lincoln Memorial is hosting the two-day, 54-hole tournament on a 6,986 yard, par-72 layout.

"I'm really proud of the guys today," said Anderson assistant coach Denton Moore. "The first round was obviously very good," he emphasized. "Anytime you shoot -11 you know it's going to be good. Nothing could go wrong in that first round. (Reece) Coleman, (Anthony) Sutton, and (Calahan) Keever were just mistake-free and lit it up. It's hard to believe, but I was more proud of the second round. It's hard to understand how you can value a +4 round over a -11 round, but the guys got off to a horrible start other than Jake (Miller). They never gave in, and finished extremely strong. Jake was really special in the second round, and kept us in the game for tomorrow. I'm really proud of the effort today, and excited to go try and win one tomorrow."

No. 14 Young Harris leads the 25th-ranked Trojans by six strokes entering Tuesday's final round, with Wingate two shots further back in third place. The fourth-ranked Railsplitters are fourth and lead North Greenville and Queens by a pair of shots. No. 16 North Georgia is seventh, with Belmont Abbey in eighth place. Newberry and No. 26 Barton are tied for ninth, with 23rd-ranked Carson-Newman holding the 11th slot.

Erskine, Lincoln Memorial B, Southern Wesleyan, Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum, King and Walters State Community College round out the 18-team field.

Wingate's Charles Joubert (65-69=134) leads the chase for individual medalist honors by three shots over North Greenville's Austin Duncan (73-64=167) and by four strokes over Young Harris' Peter Chung.

Freshman Calahan Keever leads the Trojan contingent after equaling his best round of the season with an opening-round 3-under-par 69 and is tied for ninth place entering Tuesday's final round. The Greenville native is seven shots off the pace set by Joubert.

Sophomore Reece Coleman nearly equaled his school record-setting 64 from earlier this season by firing a 6-under 66 in Monday's first round, but slipped to a 4-over 76 in the second round and is tied for 12th, alongside senior Jake Miller, who sliced six shots off a first-round 74 and carded his season-low with a 4-under 68 in the second round. Sophomore Anthony Sutton posted a 4-under-par 68 in the first round – also his best round of the year – and sits in an eight-way tie for 21st place.

Freshman Daniel Coker is tied for 82nd after carding a two-round 156, with senior Colt Martin wrapping up the first day in 89th place.

The final round is slated for a shotgun start Tuesday morning.
