ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – With weather halting play midway through the second round, the Anderson University men's golf team finished the first round in fifth place Monday at the Spring Kick-off intercollegiate, which is being hosted by Lincoln Memorial.
The 54-hole, two-day event is being played on a 7,136 yard, par 72 St. Johns Golf Club layout.
"Our team played well as a whole in the first round," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "The highlight of the day was (Reece) Coleman's 8-under 64 that ties the low-round record set by Adam Sheriff. Hopefully, we can build on that momentum and continue to play well tomorrow."
The host Railsplitters lead the tourney by two shots over West Florida, with Lander and Limestone deadlocked in third place. The Trojans are just one stroke out of third place, while Wingate and Georgia Southwestern are sixth and seventh, respectively. Flagler holds the eighth spot, with North Greenville and Young Harris tied for the ninth slot.
Newberry and Queens are deadlocked in 11th, with Georgia College, Belmont Abbey and Barton knotted in 13th place. Tusculum, King, Christian Brothers and Emmanuel rounded out the 19-team field.
Limestone's Gage Carnes (63) holds a one-shot lead over Anderson sophomore Reece Coleman, who fired a school-record 64 during the opening round. LMU's Harry Lord (65) was one shot further back in third. North Greenville's Austin Duncan (66) is in fourth place entering Tuesday's action.
AU freshman Calahan Keever is tied for 18th after posting a 1-under-par 71, while senior Jake Miller carded an opening-round 73. Freshman Daniel Coker and sophomore Parker MacDonald each fired first-round 76s.
Tuesday's final round is slated to get underway at 8 a.m. for the Trojans.
