Lady Trojans Survive To Play For Title Saturday

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Anderson University survived its poorest shooting performance of the season to beat Pfeiffer 61-42 in the semifinal round of the CVAC Women's Tournament Friday afternoon. "I told our players after the game it was a day we survived and advanced," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "We didn't play poorly. We just shot poorly. We didn't make a lot of shots that we normally make. We were taking good shots. I didn't have a beef with any of the shots we were taking." Anderson, 25-4 overall, advances to Saturday's 2 p.m. championship game to face Barton, a 64-47 winner over Erskine in the other semifinal. Anderson will be seeking its third straight CVAC Tournament title. Anderson split with Barton during the regular season. Barton won the first meeting on Dec. 3 at Wilson, N.C., 74-68, and Anderson won the Jan. 28 rematch in Anderson, 67-63. The Lady Trojans, ranked No. 3 in the East Region, shot a season-low 29 percent from the field. The previous low was 32 percent against St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Feb. 18. "I thought Pfeiffer did a great job with their transition defense," Dow said. "We were not able to get many baskets in transition." But Anderson's defense was sharp. The Lady Trojans limited Pfeiffer to 23 percent from the field (15-64). The Falcons shot just 20 percent from the field during their 81-37 loss to the Lady Trojans on Jan. 21. In three victories over Pfeiffer this season, the Lady Trojans limited the Falcons to 42 or fewer points twice. "We did a great job defensively and I thought our rebounding was solid," Dow said. "We just need to better offensively tomorrow." Anderson's 61 points and 19 total field goals set new season lows in both categories. The previous lows were 64 points and 21 field goals against Erskine on Feb. 13. Anderson was led by LaShonda Chiles with 16 points and eight rebounds. Keana Boyd was the only other Lady Trojan in double figures with 11. Chiles was just 7-for-19 from the field and made just two treys in 11 attempts. "Boyd came up big off the bench," Dow said. "She a couple of threes in the second half." Pfeiffer's Tamara Clay led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Both teams struggled in the first half. Anderson made just 8 of 35 shots from the field, while Pfeiffer made just 5 of 30 shots. Anderson made just 1 of 10 shots from behind the arc in the first half. Anderson's 21 points was its lowest-scoring first half of the season, and Pfeiffer's 15 points was a season low first half for an Anderson opponent. Anderson's previous low for scoring in a first half was 28 against Erskine on Feb. 13. Pfeiffer got within three points four times and two points once in the first six minutes of the second half. Two 3-point goals by Chiles in a 30-second span, a 3-point goal by Kim Hausman, and two free throws by Latrice Thomas increased Anderson's lead to 44-29 with 8:36 to play. Anderson's lead never slipped below double digits in the final eight minutes. Anderson's largest lead of 21 points came on a lay up by Kimberly Williams with 24 seconds remaining. Anderson won the boards, 53-50. Thomas was Anderson's leading rebounder with nine. The Lady Trojans have won six straight of 15 of their last 16. Pfeiffer ends its season at 14-16. "The game against Barton will be a tough game," Dow said. "They are very physical, and they're a good defensive team. I think we will be up for the challenge but it will be quite a challenge."
