Vanderbilt Beats Anderson In Exhibition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Vanderbilt women's basketball team defeated Anderson College, 92-68, Saturday in exhibition action at Memorial Gymnasium. Junior guard Caroline Williams led the Commodores with a game-high 28 points on 11-of-13 shooting. "[Caroline] was practicing so well and confidently," Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb said. "She's just becoming a better player. She's becoming more of a triple threat and really starting to read the game." Also in double-figures for Vanderbilt were freshman Christina Wirth (20) and sophomore transfer Liz Sherwood (18). Junior guard Dee Davis, a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection by league coaches, dished out a game-high nine assists. Mikala Fogle-Wilson led the Trojans with 25 points. "I am pleased how we responded after the halftime break basically playing them even in the second half," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "I thought we showed a lot of improvement from our first exhibition game against Clemson." Vanderbilt never trailed in the contest, opening up its first double-digit lead nine minutes into the first half on a Wirth lay-up. Six minutes later, a three-pointer by Wirth gave Vanderbilt its largest lead of the half at 41-18. Anderson was held to 25 percent shooting in the first half, but was a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe. The Commodores outrebounded the Trojans 22-9 over the initial 20 minutes to open up a 46-26 halftime lead. The Trojans chipped away at Vanderbilt's lead early in the first half as Anderson's Kim Hausman hit a trio of three-pointers to bring her team within 14 points of the Commodores. Balcomb called a timeout at the 10:33 mark of the second half, and the Commodores proceeded to put the game away by going on a 14-0 run. Sherwood scored seven of her 18 points during the run, while sophomore transfer Rachel Brockman added a pair of baskets and Williams dished out three assists. Vanderbilt shot 74 percent in the second half to pull away from Anderson. Defensive intensity was at a high for Vanderbilt in its first game experience of the fall. The Commodores held Anderson to 40 percent shooting and took a total of seven charges, including five by Wirth. "Our goal for each game is to have four charges," Balcomb said. "We had seven tonight. Tina [Wirth] shot the ball from the baseline, missed it, and sprinted all the way down and got the charge on the opposite baseline. It was really inspiring to watch." The Commodores were without the services of first-team All-SEC forward Carla Thomas, who sat out the exhibition contest with a knee injury. Two of Vanderbilt's seven newcomers were also sidelined for the game, but 51 of the Commodores' 92 points were scored by players seeing their first action at Memorial Gym.
