Anderson Survives Upset-Minded District of Columbia

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson University made 32 of 38 free throws and outscored the University of District of Columbia 10-4 in overtime to beat the Firebirds 85-79 in a non-conference women's game Monday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 7-2 overall, led 43-35 at the half. Anderson's lead reached 10 - 50-40 - with 14:49 remaining before D.C. started its rally. The Firebirds went on a 22-12 run to tie the game at 62 with 5:34 to play. A basket by LaShonda Chiles gave Anderson the lead back - 64-62 - with 5:16 play. Anderson held the lead until 56 seconds remained when Syvlia Kemp scored her second consecutive basket to give D.C. a 72-71 lead. Two free throws by Mikala Fogle-Wilson and two free throws by Chiles gave Anderson a 75-72 lead with 10 seconds remaining, but Deidra Brumbrey threw in a 25-foot jumper with one second remaining to send the game to overtime. In the overtime period, Anderson did not allow D.C. to score a field goal in the final four minutes. After two free throws by Latrice Thomas tied the game at 77 with 3:52 remaining, the Lady Trojans got a basket from Chiles and two free throws by Deidra Langston to take the lead for good. Two free throws by Jennifer Jones cut the Anderson lead to 81-79 with 2:34 remaining, but the Firebirds would get no closer. Anderson was led by Latrice Thomas with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Her 22 points tied a career high and her 14 rebounds set a new career high. Her previous career high for rebounds was nine set earlier this season against D.C. Thomas, a sophomore from Graniteville, was 14-for-16 from the line. Following Thomas for Anderson were Chiles with 19 points, Langston with 14, and Keana Boyd with 13. Chiles has scored in double figures in 54 consecutive games. D.C.'s leading scorer was Bumbrey with 20. Jaime Brown added 17 and Kemp scored 14. The Firebirds won the boards, 50-46. D.C. had 26 offensive rebounds. Kemp had 12 rebounds, 10 off the offensive glass. Fogle-Wilson and Thomas had five assists apiece for Anderson. The victory was Anderson's second of the season over D.C. The Lady Trojans won the first meeting at D.C., 88-71 on Dec. 10.
