TROJANS GO DOWN SWINGING IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

WILSON, NC--The Anderson University baseball team entered the Conference Carolinas Tournament with the inertia of winnning 5 out of their last 6 regular season games, and on Saturday in the semi-finals, the Trojans' Ryan Saxon built on that momentum when he blasted an eighth inning grand-slam to bolster AU to a two-run lead against rival Erskine; but the Flying Fleet answered in the eighth with a 3-run jack of their own, taking a 10-9 lead they would not relinquish, sending the Trojans to the elimination bracket. In the elimination bracket, AU faced off against a red-hot Belmont-Abbey squad that had already swept the Trojans in the regular season. AU never lead as the Crusaders began the game with back-to-back homers en route to a 13-4 victory, sending the Trojans home after a run that stalled in the semis. Saxon's grand slam capped a five-run top of the eighth to give the Trojans a late 9-7 advantage before Keith Hill rallied Erskine back in the home half with his clutch homer. Cory Welch (3-6) was tagged with the loss. Saxon had four RBI while Matt Hill drove in three runs. Blair Carson was named to the all-tournament team as he began the tournament with a complete game against Mount Olive hit a walk-off, game-winning homerun against Barton in the second game.
