TROJANS FALL TWICE TO #11 FLYING FLEET

TROJANS FALL TWICE TO #11 FLYING FLEET

DUE WEST, SC--The Anderson University baseball team took #11 Erskine College to the edge on Saturday in a high-noon match-up on the road, but the Trojans could not shove their archrival over the cliff, as the Flying Fleet overcame a 4-2 AU lead in the bottom of the sixth, and broke AU's spirit in the bottom of the tenth, as Keith Hill singled to start a rally that would eventually get him around the bases to beat the Trojans 5-4. Right away in game 3 of the Conference Carolinas weekend series the Trojans gave up an early 2-0 lead to the Flying Fleet. AU battled back in the third inning of the 7-inning affair, tying the game at 2-2, but Erskine just had too much punch; the Fleet pieced together a 5-run bottom half of the third, and that would be all they would need to win 7-2. AU was led at the plate by Derek Hipp and BJ Smith. Hipp was a combined 5-8 on the day, rounding the bags twice and Smith posted a similar line, batting 5-9 on two runs. Hitting the ball was certainly no problem for the Trojans, but Hipp and Smith were glaring reflections of the bigger problem on the day for the team, as they pumped out 22 hits, only to collect 6 runs while leaving 22 on base. Trent Still was 2-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs in game one--among those hits was a 2-run shot in the top of the fifth, which at the time, gave AU a 4-2 lead. The Trojans will regroup and head back to Memorial Stadium Sunday for a game against future SAC opponent Catawba. First pitch is set for 3pm.
