ANDERSON, SC--The Anderson University baseball team had won five straight games entering Tuesday night's match-up with Lander University, but with the Conference Carolinas tournament just two days away, and a senior night celebration at hand, coach Joe Miller used the non-conference bout as more of a tourney tune-up than anything else; over the course of the nine-inning showdown, the Trojans ran 8 different pitchers onto the mound, and let every healthy senior get in the game to throw. The Trojans eventually fell short 6-3, but that was not before they battled back to within a run in the bottom of the seventh; AU thought they had tied the game at 4-4, but Nick Easterlin was thrown out when he tagged on a deep fly ball to left by Matt Hill. The senior was called out on a relay throw home that turned out to be a pivotal two-out sequence, ending a Trojan threat. The Trojans were led offensively by Ryan Saxon and Josh Grubbs. The speedy Grubbs was 2-4 with a run and an RBI, including a triple to start the 2-run seventh inning. Saxon went 2-3 with an RBI. The Trojans' Jordan Oates was poised in his one inning of work, as he made quick work of the Bearcats in the fifth, striking out 2 on just one hit. Senior Luis Martinez also posted a scoreless sixth on one K and one walk. The Trojans will travel on Wednesday, and then on Thursday, they do battle with 2008 national champion Mount Olive. Having won five of their last six contests, the Trojans head to Wilson with plenty of confidence.
