MONROE, N.C. - Freshman Makalyn Poole shot a team-low 3-over-par 75 on the third day of action to lead the Anderson women's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship, hosted by Wingate on the par-72, 5,981-yard Monroe Country Club layout.
Queens University of Charlotte held on to claim its first SAC Championship after joining the conference in 2014 by four shots over defending champion Carson-Newman. Lincoln Memorial entered the final day in fourth place but flipped spots with Newberry to finish in third, two strokes behind Carson-Newman, while Newberry was two shots further back. The host Bulldogs finished fifth, with Tusculum holding onto sixth.
Anderson moved into the seventh slot with the third-best round of the day and sixth-best round of the three-day tournament. Coker, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill and Brevard finished out the 11-team field.
Queens' Grace Glaze (223) overcame a one-shot deficit to claim the individual title by one stroke over Lenoir-Rhyne's Abby Hartsell (224) and two shots over Newberry's Nabila Inak (225).
Every golfer for the Black and Gold posted their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, with Poole carding a birdie on the 13th hole and finishing alone in 13th place with a three-round 238, just two shots from earning All-Conference accolades. Sophomore Riley Lovorn trimmed eight strokes from Monday's second round and finished in a tie for 25th with a 243.
Freshman Tiffany Elam was four shots better than her second-round effort and shared 32nd place with a 246. Senior Braiden Furtick (249) and freshman Blake Hodges (259) each posted a pair of birdies in the final round and finished in a tie for 40th and 49th, respectively.
